Ten years ago I was a flat, empty section at the quiet end of a cul-de-sac, with a view over the lake to Mt Manaia and nothing standing on me at all. Someone looked at that and built deliberately.
For the sun, for the space, for what you can see from here.
Right now I'm empty again. The echo in my hallway won't last long, but it does mean someone gets to walk in and start, without waiting on anybody else's moving truck.
The reserve still borders me, so nothing has gone up that blocks the great views across the lake to Manaia and the Heads. The cul-de-sac takes care of the traffic.
Harbour and surf beaches, boat ramps and Marsden Cove Marina are all close. The school bus runs past for both primary and secondary. Whangarei is an easy commute, and I'm roughly 90 minutes north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Most newer subdivisions make you choose between a decent house and somewhere to put the boat. I've never understood that. Bring the motorhome, the boat, the trailer, and the relatives who turn up towing all three. There's room off the street for the whole lot.
Inside, 216sqm, four bedrooms, and living zones that don't compete with each other, including a second lounge big enough that the kids are streaming their shows and the test cricket live can happen in separate rooms.
Outside, 724sqm of flat, easy-care ground, and outdoor living set up so a long lunch never gets called off by the forecast.
Low-maintenance by design. That is still paying off today.
I've done ten good years, and I'm ready for the next lot.
The keys are waiting. So am I.
