9 Mopanui Street previously belonged to Stan and Alison Durry, they raised their two children here. Stan was a Boat builder by trade and worked at The Port in Port Chalmers, in 1962 he began construction of the current house, we believe the building was completed in 1969.
We (George and Sarah), bought the property in 2019 after Stan fell unwell and both he and Alison were moved into care, they have both since passed away.
It is our understanding, (courtesy of Angela the neighbour to the left) that the Durry family owned a large portion of the hill, and sold off sections over the years, 9 Mopanui was their last section. Stan grew up on the property, his parents original house was at the rear of the section (now demolished).
As Stan had lovingly crafted the house and used native timbers throughout we wanted all renovations to honour what he crafted, whilst bringing the house into a more functional state for modern living.
Carpets were lifted and rimu floors restored, internal walls were insulated and relined (excluding the kitchen, bathroom and laundry), the underfloor is fully insulated and a moisture barrier has been installed, ceiling insulation and a new heat pump were also installed to create a cosy home environment.
The back section was terraced and 2x new 25,000L water tanks were installed. This brings the total estimated water storage at the property to ~60,000L.
The front section is home to the septic system which received a new pump and disposal line, the tank has recently been emptied and requires doing every 3 years or so.
